Having graduated in 2015 she then received an MS in Aerospace Aeronautical/Space Engineering from USC. Rebecca currently serves as Senior Systems Engineer with Advanced Space. We asked Rebecca what types of courses she pursued at MHC that led her into space science. She said her first semester she enrolled in Multivariable Calculus with Professor Margaret Robinson and almost immediately her passion for mathematics encouraged her to become a Math major. This was a switch since she had originally expected to study International Relations and Linguistics, but became captivated with STEM. Interestingly, a course “Logical Thought” taught by the Philosophy Department really constructed for her how math was a language that could be used to describe and abstract problems. She studied abroad in Budapest where she really leaned into the applied side of mathematics. Upon returning she took Engineering courses as part of the five college consortium offerings including Fluid Dynamics and Thermodynamics which prepared her for graduate school. During her studies at USC, she joined the Space Engineering Research Center working with a team to build a 3U CubeSat-and over a few years there, was able to gain hands on experience integrating and testing hardware with a multi-disciplinary team. It may seem obvious given her field of work that AI figures significantly, but she provided us some fascinating insight. She adds “ AI and LLM’s are powerful tools, but like any tool, the value of the result will be correlated with the quality of the input. I would emphasize in any domain engineering-computer science, aero and astronautical, mechanical- for students to focus on the fundamentals. Being able to understand and explain problems at the most basic levels is more valuable than having sophisticated output and often a prerequisite for correctly using the output of models and recognizing their limitations.” Our newsletter editor inquired as to Rebecca’s biggest challenges working as a systems engineer in spacecraft. She noted: “anticipating how one decision in one subsystem will have ripple effects across the entire system. All design decisions are inter-connected, not just in physical hardware, but across the technical and programmatic resources like cost and schedule. These design decisions ultimately will have to operate in the most remote and harsh settings, where you cannot make hardware changes and are often severely limited in the software changes available. The satellite must autonomously detect and manage its faults, and anticipating those faults and designing a system that can isolate and recover issues, while still executing its mission on schedule and within budget, is an enormous balancing act.” Emma Anderson (not pictured) Meet Emma a Homework Platform Support Specialist with Flatworld, a digital college-level textbook publishing company. After graduating from MHC in 2015, she completed a Certificate in Publishing from Columbia University. We asked what classes and experiences had sparked her interest in the publishing industry, and she indicated she took a lot of literature classes as an English major. So of course, fiction publishing was something she was aware of, and she’s always been a bookworm. Two classes really stood out-both on essays- one focused on reading and one on writing essays and different kinds of short form nonfiction writing. Both classes got her looking at essay collections and narrative nonfiction. She also found her literature classes offered a breadth of writers and time periods and spawned further interest in the publishing business. Emma interned for several summers at a tech company that makes simulation software used by researchers and companies. She started off editing Power Points to push new branding ideas for the company. She moved from editing some videos and writing step by step instructions on demos of how to use the company’s simulation software to then posting them as a blog to those in the industry. Emma also worked on research for e-books which really got her thinking about the possibilities within digital learning and publishing. We asked her how artificial intelligence (AI) is influencing the industry. She said “Flatworld is starting to use it for some support (functions). So we’ll script videos demonstrating how someone can do something in our online books, how to access the study questions, etc. and then AI will create a voiceover. Our sales team is also using it to create personalized videos, using AI that actually learns how they speak and look, and then creates them talking to professors from a script, instead of their creating an individual video.” What are some of the challenges she faces working in digital higher learning? She noted that one of the major aspects of her work involves checking reports from students and professors about errors they think they’ve found in homework questions which require extensive background research. Both are MHC 2010 graduates! We asked them how they navigated their coursework at MHC, what drew them to their current work, what advice they would give current students, and what challenges each faces working in the complex health care field. Brigitte encourages pre-health students to take courses that match their interests, taking advantage of a chance to try anything. She admits regretfully with her own choice of courses, that she did not design her own major. But as an environmental science student, it left her some time to be involved in exploring food scarcity and environmental issues in the immediate Springfield area and influenced her interest in obesity and diet. Rebecca pursued a Biology major, but knew “I didn’t want to do Pre-Med. Many of the biology courses aided in my pursuit of a nursing degree”, and she also “minored in English (specifically writing) which has helped tremendously with charting responsibilities she has today.” Brigitte’s own medical history, having earlier in life undergone a series of operations, has strengthened her passion for the role of physician assistant. That gave her greater insight into the need for better patient-doctor communications. As a physician assistant, she works with children with medical problems related to diabetes. Rebecca’s passion for hospice nursing “allows me to use the critical thinking that Mt. Holyoke honed in me. It is more autonomous than working bedside at a hospital. I cherish the opportunity to spend as much time with patients as they need to ensure they have quality of life at the end of their lives, as well as being a support to families.” As for challenges, Brigitte mentioned the extra work that insurance agencies require especially around submitting her progress notes. Majoring in French & Psychology, her sights were set on law school but she waited until 2021 to enroll due to COVID. Maya has interned in the field of family law for the last two summers. Last year, she interned at the Harriett Buhai Center for Family Law, which is a nonprofit that provides free family law services to low-income individuals in the LA area. This summer, she clerked at a private civil litigation firm with a strong focus in family law matters. She has been able to work in both the private & public interest sides and plans to work in Family Law upon graduation. Maya found that reading & writing-intensive courses she took at Mount Holyoke to be a great help in managing the significant amount of reading required in law school, as well as the essay based exams. She also credits MHC’s intimate and discussion-oriented classroom environments with giving her the ability to articulate opinions and participate confidently with others. Maya rates networking as a very important part of the law school experience. Maggie did not follow a direct route from Mount Holyoke to law school. She graduated from MHC in 2007 and then worked as a journalist in Massachusetts, Connecticut, and New Jersey before returning to her home in Tennessee. Maggie continued to write for newspapers, medical publications, and an online news site. She followed her passion for writing to an MFA program at West Virginia University, where she wrote about race in the South. When the three-year program wrapped up, she once again returned to Tennessee, hoping to find an easy job that would pay the rent and give her time to write. She’d always worked in restaurants on the side and landed at a 44-seat lunch and dinner spot. There, Maggie discovered her second passion and second career – managing restaurants and bar programs. In 2019, she and her husband moved to Denver to explore a larger market. They lived in Colorado during the pandemic and Maggie continued to work in restaurants. She did, however, find the work less meaningful as the issue of homelessness grew in Denver, as it did in much of the country. Seeing the inequity triggered her interest in pursuing a law degree. Although Maggie had not thought about law school while at Mt. Holyoke, her experiences there did help to prepare her for the demands that she now faces at Loyola. She points, specifically, to her MHC sociology course on inequality in America and the strength and joy she found in building community through the MHC rugby team and Jazz band. Maggie has offered some advice for any current MHC students, or for any alums in graduate school. She encourages them to learn everything that they might have an interest in while they have the opportunity to do so in a classroom environment. Those that follow her suggestion should be better prepared to follow a career in law and justice. Maggie’s experiences in law school indicate that she should be ready to handle the tasks that she might take on in the future. Starting this fall, she plans to take a course that serves as a civil rights practicum. The fall class prepares students for a placement in a civil rights firm or organization, like the ACLU, during the spring semester. An additional fall practicum on homeless rights will help her in serving as a volunteer at the L.A. Mission’s legal clinic, a homeless shelter on Skid Row. Maggie will also participate in Loyola’s Meditation Clinic where students have the opportunity to learn how to conduct a meditation between tenants and landlords, family members, and other civil litigants. She has also assumed the responsibilities of a stage manager. Her prior work with community-based organizations led her in 2000 to establish the arts nonprofit, “Voices Breaking Boundaries,” headquartered in Houston, Texas.
